    FAQ

  • 1.  Is NicoBloc available on NHS prescription (in the UK)?

As an unlicensed product, NicoBloc can be prescribed by a doctor under the NHS provided the doctor can justify its use, which may be that the patient has tried all the other prescribable methods without success or that there may be medical reasons why the patient can not use other products.

The doctor can confirm with the Prescription Pricing Authority (PPA) the current pricing reimbursement details.

  • 2.  Is NicoBloc safe to use?

As NicoBloc is not ingested, it can be used safely by anyone who wants to give up smoking. There are no known contraindications meaning that smokers with medical conditions or on medication can also use NicoBloc.

NicoBloc has already been tried and tested by thousands of smokers.

  • 3.  Does NicoBloc make cigarettes safer to smoke?

NicoBloc traps up to 99% of the tar and nicotine normally inhaled when smoking filter cigarettes. This process helps to gradually reduce nicotine intake while you quit smoking, making the final break easier and more likely to succeed.

NicoBloc does not make cigarettes safe only less harmful. There are many other chemicals still present in the smoke taken into the lungs. The only way to avoid all the noxious chemicals is not to smoke.

  • 4.  How quickly can I stop smoking with NicoBloc?

NicoBloc helps you to stop smoking at your own pace. Just how quickly you can stop is dependant upon your own individual circumstances and smoking habits. Your willpower also has a part to play. Extensive trials over a two year period have shown that a six week period is a comfortable time frame for most smokers. This reduction period allows the body to gradually adjust to the physical changes that occur when nicotine intake is reduced over a period of time.

  • 5.  How long will one pack of NicoBloc last?

One pack of NicoBloc should last a 20-a-day smoker about 2-3 weeks and a 10-a-day smoker about 4-5 weeks. As cigarette consumption usually decreases as the number of drops goes up, a pack of cigarettes tends to last much longer than normal. In most cases, the cost savings on cigarettes more than covers the cost of NicoBloc plus of course, there are the health benefits of reduced tar and nicotine intake.

NicoBloc is designed to work with cigarette filters. People who smoke roll-ups can benefit from NicoBloc by applying it to a mini-filter prior to rolling the cigarette.

  • 8.  What is the origin of NicoBloc?

The principle of blocking nicotine and tar in cigarette filters was first observed in the 1960's in the Vietnam war (see History). In the 1980's in America, formal research and development was undertaken to develop this concept into a product (NicoBloc) that all smokers could use. During the 1990's, thousands of smokers in the UK and Ireland took part in corporate 'stop smoking programmes' using NicoBloc and achieved very significant results. Due to popular demand, NicoBloc and the core elements of the programme were refined into a retail product and have been made available to the general public.

  • 11.  I am having difficulty applying the second or third drop of NicoBloc into the filter of my cigarette

When applying two or three drops to the cigarette, it is important that the process for applying one drop is repeated two or three times rather than putting on double or treble drops at the same time.

It helps to make the indentation deeper and to allow the previous drop to soak in before applying the next drop.

Also, sealing your lips around the filter and giving a quick forceful puff in between applying the drops can also help.

  • 12.  If 3 drops of NicoBloc blocks up to 99% tar & nicotine, would 4 or 5 eliminate it altogether?

Increasing the number of drops added to the filter might block more nicotine and tar. However, adding more NicoBloc to the filter, is likely to make the cigarette more difficult to smoke and would probably reduce a smokers desire to keep with the programme

  • 13.  What is 'The Wean Machine'?

The 'Wean Machine' can be found in the 'Smokers Tools' section of the NicoBloc website. By telling the system what week of the NicoBloc programme you are on and what your previous week's smoking pattern was like, the system will generate a reducing smoking target for you for the following week. If you follow this plan, you may be able to comfortably stop smoking in about six weeks.

  • 14.  What is the 'Rosen Programme'?

The Rosen Programme was the corporate stop smoking initiative that was operated between 1995 and 2001 in Ireland and the UK which provided the opportunity for NicoBloc to be tested outside of the laboratory situation. Several thousand smokers within companies took part in the programme which achieved an overall quit rate of 42%.

Many companies chose to use the Rosen Programme to help their staff precisely because NicoBloc was not a drug or a medical treatment/therapy.

Rosen is an acronym for ‘Reduce and Overcome Smoking by Eliminating Nicotine’.

  • 15.  Does NicoBloc have a taste? I have experienced a bitter taste/slight burning sensation.

NicoBloc has a slight sweet taste (which not everybody can detect) but does not change the taste of the cigarette.

Tar on the other hand has an unpleasant taste. Normally when smoking, the tar comes into your mouth as a vapour, bypassing your taste buds and going straight down into your lungs where it turns into a thick nasty liquid as it cools down.

NicoBloc traps a proportion of the tar (depending upon how many NicoBloc drops you are using) in the filter of the cigarette. Some filters allow some of the tar to collect on the surface of the filter rather than just below the surface.

In this case, it is possible to get some of the tar on your tongue where you will experience the taste of the tar and in some cases could experience a slight burning sensation. This just shows how bad tar is.

The way to avoid this is to either adjust how far into your mouth you usually put your cigarette, or follow the instructions in the NicoBloc booklet for forcing NicoBloc further into the filter.

Some 'low tar' cigarettes have perforation holes in the filter which can allow tar to seep out from the side. Again, adjusting how you smoke the cigarette should solve this.

There is actually a benefit to this. Many people find the experience of realising how unpleasant cigarette tar is, a key factor in increasing their resolve to give up cigarettes as they do not want to continue polluting their bodies with this noxious chemical.
